The Committee of Experts of the Follow-Up Mechanism of the Convention of Belém do Pará (MESECVI) of the Organization of American States (OAS) made an official visit from March 1st to 3rd to discuss attacks against women in the political arena and provide technical assistance to authorities in this area. The delegation was led by the Chair of the Committee of Experts, Marcela Huaita Alegre from Peru, accompanied by the Experts Leila Linhares Barsted from Brazil, Lourdes Montero Justiniano from Bolivia, and Sylvia Mesa Peluffo from Costa Rica, and by the Technical Secretary of the MESECVI, Luz Patricia Mejía Guerrero and Tatiana Bensa.

This visit took place in the context of recent cases of violence against women in political life, about which the Committee expressed its concern and offered the authorities of the Argentine State its technical support with a view to strengthening the mechanisms for preventing, punishing and eradicating such violence. The delegation held meetings with authorities and representatives of the State, with female deputies senators, with the President of the Senate and Vice President of Argentina, as well as with women victims of acts of violence in the political sphere, at the university and civil society organizations when it could learn about the context of political violence, deepen and present Recommendations to the State to address this problem.
