Committee of Experts of the Follow-up Mechanism of the Convention of Belém do Pará (MESECVI) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will carry out an official visit, from March 1st to 3rd, to discuss attacks against women in the political arena and provide technical assistance to the authorities in this area.
The delegation will be headed by the chairman of the Committee of Experts, Marcela Huaita Alegre, from Peru, accompanied by Experts Leila Linhares Barsted, from Brazil; Lourdes Montero Justiniano, from Bolivia, and Sylvia Mesa Peluffo, from Costa Rica, and by the MESECVI Technical Secretary, Luz Patricia Mejía Guerrero and Tatiana Bensa.
This visit takes place in the context of recent cases of violence against women in political life, about which the Committee expressed its concern and offered the authorities of the Argentine State its technical support with the aim of strengthening the mechanisms for the prevention, punishment and eradication of said violence.
The delegation will hold meetings with State authorities and representatives, as well as with women victims of acts of violence in the political sphere and civil society organizations in order to learn about the situation, deepening knowledge of the norms established by the Model Law of the Inter-American Commission to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women in Political Life and draw up a series of recommendations to tackle this problem.
