CEPIA and Catholics for Choice/Brazil took the initiative of inviting a group of Brazilian experts from various backgrounds with long experience in defending reproductive rights, the secularity of the State and democratic principles, to unite in defense of the health and dignity of women and girls writing a collective repudiation letter addressed to the president of the Chamber of Deputies. Far-right conservative forces, using the politicization of religion, threaten the rights guaranteed to Brazilian women and girls, as in the case of Law Project 1904/24, which increases the sentence of women and girls who seek abortion after 22 weeks by up to 20 years. “We are a group that came together to express our concern for attacks on sexual and reproductive rights in Brazil. The fundamental point of the letter is that acquired reproductive rights are not negotiable, they cannot be a bargaining chip, neither from a religious nor political point of view”, said Jacqueline Pitanguy.
