On July 24th, Latin American, Caribbean and Diaspora Black Women’s Day, the Follow-up Mechanism to the Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women (MESECVI) held an online seminar to launch General Recommendation No. 5 on Violence against Women of African Descent, which provides broad and clear guidelines for states and civil society on preventing and addressing gender-based violence against women of African descent.
General Recommendation No. 5 was drawn up by MESECVI in a strategic alliance with the Network of Latin American, Caribbean and Diaspora Women (RMAAD) and the United Nations Population Fund for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNFPA). Leila Linhares Barsted, member of the MESECVI Committee and Expert, accompanied the launch, which was open to Brazilian women’s organizations. Lucia Xavier, Director of the CRIOLA organization, was one of the speakers at the seminar.
