On July 5th, the Permanent Forum on Domestic, Family and Gender Violence of the Rio de Janeiro State School of the Judiciary (EMERJ), together with the Gender, Race and Ethnicity Research Center (NUPEGRE) and the National School for the Training and Improvement of Magistrates (ENFAM), with the support of the National Movement for Parity in the Judiciary, promoted a series of lectures on Gender and Epistemic Injustices.
The event’s opening panel was attended by the Minister of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) Rogério Schietti Cruz, judges from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice and the Federal Regional Court, under the coordination of Judge Adriana Ramos de Mello.
Leila Linhares Barsted represented CEPIA at this seminar, which debated the concept and consequences of epistemic injustice, a theoretical reference for understanding the impact of prejudice in the judgment of cases of violence against women, when it is not uncommon to observe a culture that discredits the testimonies of women victims of violence, re-victimizing women who feel discouraged from facing a trial because they do not feel welcomed by the judiciary.
