On June 11th and 12th, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) held its 9th Conference of States Parties to the Follow-up Mechanism to the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women (MESECVI) in Santiago, Chile.

For two days, representatives of the OAS States Parties, International Agencies, participants of the MESECVI Committee of Experts (CEVI) and Civil Society Organizations celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Belém do Pará Convention, shared experiences and discussed the achievements and challenges for the implementation of this Convention, which has been a fundamental instrument for women’s organizations and social movements in Latin America and the Caribbean in their struggle to guarantee women’s human rights. In the context of the 30th anniversary, the States Parties called for the implementation of strategies to accelerate the effective application of the Convention at the legislative, institutional and regional levels, and to act to update and strengthen legislation in order to guarantee the eradication of all forms of violence against women. CEVI member Leila Linhares Barsted accompanied the Brazilian delegation to the conference.
