On September 24th, the Women’s Commission of the Brazilian Lawyers Institute (IAB) held the Gender Lawfare Seminar. The speakers were lawyers Leila Linhares Barsted, representing CEPIA, and Soraia Mendes. The aim of this event was to debate the effects of the use or manipulation of laws as an instrument to combat an opponent (Lawfare), which has been used to a large extent against women in legal proceedings, blaming the victims with the use of moral arguments used to attack and disqualify them, a practice historically used especially in relation to gender-based violence against women and in family law actions. These practices have intensified in the media, with fake news, which ends up influencing the mentality of members of the judiciary. Mariana Barsted, from CEPIA, attended the seminar.
