Lawyer Leila Linhares Barsted is a central figure in the fight against violence against Brazilian women. A member of the Maria da Penha Law Consortium, she was one of those responsible for drafting the bill that would become one of the most advanced pieces of legislation in the world in the fight against domestic violence. In 2023, she received the Carlota Pereira de Queirós Woman-Citizen Diploma from the Commission for the Defence of Women’s Rights, recognizing four decades of work in the Brazilian feminist movement.

Leila listens attentively to the new generations of feminists while at the same time committing herself to “not retiring” from her extensive struggle. As a member of the Committee of Experts of the Follow-up Mechanism to the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI) of the Organization of American States, in November she took part in the 20th Meeting of the Committee of Experts (CEVI), debating issues relevant to women’s lives.

In an interview, Leila comments on what was discussed at the meeting, talks about the importance of the Maria da Penha Law Consortium and about a career committed to the rights of Brazilian women.
