CEPIA celebrates its participation in the 15th Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting (EFLAC), which took place in El Salvador from November 22nd to 25th.
We attended the Free and Safe Abortion assembly, which brought together feminists to exchange and think about strategies for progress in Latin America and the Caribbean. CEPIA also promoted a self-managed activity together with other Brazilian organizations, and in addition to coordinating with our comrades, it was quite emblematic to take part in the march on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The date was declared at the 1st EFLAC, in 1981, in Colombia, in honor of the sisters Minerva, Patria and María Teresa Mirabal, (“Las Mariposas”) who lived in the Dominican Republic and were tortured and murdered by the dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, on November 25th, 1960. The death of the three activists became a symbol of the fight against violence against women throughout Latin America.
In yet another emotional moment, a declaration was signed, which can be found in Portuguese at @15eflac, and from which we highlight the excerpt:
“Our power is transformative! Despite restrictions on our rights, threats, persecution, disinformation and hatred of our identities, feminisms continue to organize. We put history before cruelty and now that we’re together we won’t be separated, friends! Joy, dignity and freedom are ours. See you at the next EFLAC!”
