The German news agency DW published, on May 14th, an article about maternity and women, in which Jacqueline Pitanguy was interviewed. She recalled the advances achieved in the 1988 Constitution with the extension of maternity leave to 120 days, as well as the right of children from zero to six years old to day care and paternity leave, because, as stated in the campaign of the National Council for Women’s Rights, the child does not belong only to the mother. Jacqueline also remembered that the Constitution extended social benefits to rural women and domestic workers. She stressed, however, the need to increase paternity leave, ensure 180 days of maternity leave, and even allow the leave to be taken alternately by the father or mother according to their availability and professional commitments as it already happens in European countries, also pointing out that the concept of family is plural.
