The Consortium Maria da Penha Law, of which CEPIA is part, with the participation of Leila Linhares Barsted, in broad articulation with the women’s movements is initiating the elaboration of a proposal of a General Law on Violence against Women in order to adjust widely to the Inter-American Convention to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women (Convention of Belém do Pará) considering that the Maria da Penha Law of 2006 that gave visibility to violence in family relations does not cover all situations of gender violence against women.
Leila Barsted made an extensive survey of the legislation of several Latin American countries and international documents of human rights protection to support this proposal.
