There are characters in the political history of Brazil who played a fundamental role in defending women’s rights, acting against conservative processes. Nelson Carneiro was one of these characters. During 40 years of experience in the National Congress as a deputy, constituent, senator, he presented numerous law projects that had a positive influence on women’s lives, such as Law 121/1962 that ensures the legal autonomy of married women, the 1977 divorce law, which recognizes the stable union, the equalization of the rights of children born outside or inside the marriage, previously called illegitimate children. Emília Silveira, filmmaker, is directing a film that recovers the biography of Nelson Carneiro and interviewed Jacqueline Pitanguy, on August 13, when Jacqueline highlighted Nelson Carneiro’s support for women’s rights and his role as a great ally during the constituent process.
