On March 21, 1960, in South Africa, 20,000 black people were protesting against a law that limited the places they could travel to. The demonstration was peaceful, but army troops fired on the crowd. 69 people died and 186 others were injured in the episode that became known as the Shaperville massacre.

In memory of the tragedy, the United Nations instituted March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

We invite you to watch the video Did You Know? led by Tabita Cristine and Kezia Santos that brings the definition of racial discrimination, alerts to the trivialisation of discriminatory practices  and to the need to denounce racial discrimination.
