On September 16th, the Research Group on Gender, Race and Ethnicity (NUPREG) of the Rio de Janeiro State School of Magistracy (EMERJ) promoted the webinar “Sexuality and Reproduction in Brazilian Law”, within the Cycle of Debates on Rights Reproductive Products.

Leila Linhares Barsted, member of EMERJ’s Permanent Forum on Domestic, Family and Gender Violence, representing CEPIA, participated as an exhibitor bringing a historical retrospective of women’s struggle for equality. “Brazil has one of the most severe laws on termination of pregnancy,” said Leila.

“International documents highlight three important elements for reproductive health: the existence of reproductive autonomy, abortion as a public health issue and the State’s duty to reduce maternal mortality. The high rates of maternal mortality from abortion cases have not been sensitive elements for the Brazilian legislator “, observed Leila.
