The Inter American Dialogue (IAD), an organization that promotes dialogue and debate on relevant issues of politics, economics and human rights in the Americas and of which Jacqueline Pitanguy, is a member, organized an online event on Covid-19 and Human Rights in Latin America with the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the UN, Michelle Bachelet, who was President of Chile and also joined the IAD.
The debate was led by Michael Shifter, President of the IAD. Bachelet, has warned of the threat to civil liberties posed by governments that use the Covid-19 emergency as cover to concentrate power or introduce repressive policies. She also addressed the question of the increase in domestic violence as one of her main concerns regarding the violation of human rights during the Covid-19 pandemic.
